For the majority of these two weeks, we have been reading the novel Looking for Alaska.  Here is a digital copy of the book, and here is the page where the videos are housed.

We also had Choice Day (10/30).

On Monday and Tuesday (10/28-10/29), we developed some questions about a topic that interested us, and we made some tag clouds that described school.  We also came up with some Looking for Alaska questions.

On Thursday (10/31) and Friday (11/1), we were in the lab making MentorMob playlists and beginning the research to answer our questions.  We added 4-5 good sources to our playlist to answer that question.

1st period 10/31: We watched a video called Dave and Trey Go To Africa.

Motivation and Success Assessment - We watched Dan Ariely's video called "What makes us feel good about our work?" and answered the following questions: 1. What is the main idea of the video? 2. How can we use the information in this video to make students care more about their schoolwork at EBA?

Field Trip - We went to the Oakland Museum of California on Thursday, 10/10.  We completed an assignment there.  See me if you were absent.

Feedback for DTP - We watched and provided feedback for the Photo Journal project groups in North Carolina.  If you missed the activity, you should at least watch the video of proposals.

In order to make it as easy as possible to make up assigned work, I have created this playlist of files to allow you to look through them more easily.  Also, all the warm-up and longer videos are in the first two steps, which are included as YouTube playlists.  Note: not every class watched every video.

If you need any of the notes I've taken in class, either on the board or on paper, look in this playlist.  Note that there are multiple copies of notes sometimes, and each one includes the period from which those notes originated.

Finally, the video playlists seem to have trouble embedding on MentorMob playlists.  So here they are.  The first is the videos we have watched for content, such as the TED Talks, and the videos about education.  The second is the warm-up videos we've watched.

Week #6 (9/30-10/4)

This week, we worked on the following assignments:
  • The Photo Journal - because we had some computer lab scheduling issues, we will be turning in this assignment on Monday.  Make sure you have the pictures A) emailed to you, B) uploaded to your google drive, C) have them on a USB or SD card, or D) printed out (D is the worst of the options).
  • Snapshot of a Modern Learner and Questions - read this article and follow the instructions.  Then answer all the questions from the end of the document.  The final question requires a full page answer.
  • Visual Art Assessment, Part 1 - we created a piece of visual art to represent the important ideas in any of the warm-up videos we've watched this year.
  • Visual Art Assessment, Part 2 - we did the same process for the another video.  Each group chose one of the following four videos: A) Mysterious Workings of the Teenage Brain, B) How to Learn Anything in 20 Hours, C) The Power of Belief: Mindset and Success, and D) School Kills Creativity.
  • What Makes Us Feel Good About Our Work? Notes - we watched the first 12 minutes of this video and took notes.
